I would guess that 90% of people who have a big telephoto lens have a converter of some description on the lens 95% of the time; the best converters like the Canon 1.4x are truly excellent but lenses must in theory perform at their best when used alone so here are a few I tried with the 400 DO2 and no converter; 5D4

the declining Curlew and increasing Black-tailed Godwit

gale force winds produced the highest ever Curlew count at Alkborough yesterday with 579 birds present - still 3400 Black-tails at Grimsby but by the end of January they will be thinking about heading down to the Ouse Washes though by the look of things water levels will need to recede somewhat

I probably have more photos of Black-tailed Godwits than any other species -- maybe Marsh Harrier!
